In addition to in-house education, Wellington ICU runs several courses for medical & nursing staff that are open to external applicants.

All courses are not for profit with any fees charged used to cover venue hire, catering and the organisational costs of running them.

Current courses:

  • An annual four day course to prepare Intensive Care registrars for the Fellowship of the College of Intensive Care Medicine (FCICM) Part II exam that includes lectures, vivas & 'hot-case' clinical practice. The faculty includes eminent international speakers & CICM examiners.
  • A preparatory two day course for nurses new to Intensive Care covering basic concepts on drugs, physiology, equipment and investigations. This course is run and taught by the Nurse Educators within Wellington ICU.
  • An annual three day course that includes lectures & practical sessions on aeromedicine, altitude physiology and aviation safety. The faculty consists of staff from within the Wellington Intensive Care Flight Service and pilots and crew from Life Flight as well as invited external speakers.
